About 27 million tons of rock were crushed at Treadwell– and the tailings from the ore were dumped along the rocky shoreline to form what is now Sandy Beach – 80 acres of recreational land. The slurry of water and fine tailings left each mill in tailings pipelines – the original ones were made of wood.
