4.    Vanner Room

Directly below the 300 Stamp Mill was the 29,000 square foot Vanner Room.  There, in a constant flow of water, 120 cylindrical Frue Vanners rolled and shook the crushed ore.  Waste rock went over the top while the gold-bearing ore remained on the bottom.   After the gold was extracted, about 27 million tons of tailings pulverized rock and ore from the five Treadwell stamp mills – were deposited along the rocky shoreline, forming 80 acres of sandy beach.  Several of the original vanner rollers – now rusted and deteriorated – are visible along the historic trail.
