31.   Gymnasium/Handball Court

When not working in the mines, Treadwell employees enjoyed a variety of athletic pastimes.  Sports was so important that by 1915, Treadwell had its own athletic director, a man by the name of Tom McDonald who organized competitions and taught “general athletic” classes.  In 1910, the foundry moved from its original location near the central hoist to the filled area below the Mexican Mine.  The old foundry buildings were then reconfigured to house a swimming pool (natatorium) and a gymnasium that was used for basketball and hand ball.  Treadwell had both men’s and women’s basketball teams.
