Tons of sandy waste tailings from the milling process at the 240 and 300 mills created the fields below bunkhouses #1 and #2 where baseball and rugby were played. The tailings raised the level of the beach above the highest tide. The field had a coating of well-rolled clay on the infield and level sod on the outfield. Baseball was extremely popular in Treadwell and each of the four Treadwell mines fielded a team. They competed among themselves, as well as with Juneau and Douglas. The competition was fierce, and the Alaska Treadwell Gold Mining Co. would recruit college athletes to come up for the summer to work in the mines and play baseball. A grandstand was erected for the fans and the 27-piece Treadwell Band, and a “sanitary” drinking fountain installed as well. The dining hall next to the baseball grounds had a small dairy herd and allowed the cows to graze on the baseball field grass when no games were being played.
