25.   240-Stamp Mill & Hydroelectric Plant

John Treadwell erected the first hydro mechanical 5-stamp mill in 1882 on the shores of Paris Creek – now the waterfall cascading from the top of the Treadwell Glory Hole.  By 1883 the mill grew to 120 stamps.  In 1887, an additional 120 stamps were added.   In 1898, Alaska’s first hydro electrical plant was installed at the 240 Mill.  Its generator and associated Pelton wheels and valves from the 1898 plant are visible today.   John Treadwell’s original 5-Stamp Mill is displayed near the log shelter at Savikko Park where the historical trail begins.
