22.   School

From about 1903 to 1915, Treadwell children attended school in a one-room schoolhouse (with one teacher and two outhouses) located near the Mexican Mine.  By 1915, the school-age population had increased so a “modern” school with separate playrooms for girls and boys, lavatories, and an upstairs teacherage was built.  It was located on filled land below the store and office building.  The 65 ft. by 54 ft. wooden school served fifty children in two classrooms with two teachers.  In the evenings, the school was used for English language instruction for immigrant miners representing seventeen nationalities.  Treadwell also hosted an active parent and teacher organization.
